Travel Consults and Vaccines

At Doctors on Riccarton we can help you with a range of travel vaccinations and we provide up-to-date medical information about traveling to maximise your health protection. We are also a certified Yellow Fever vaccination provider for those patients who may be travelling to Africa or South America (click here to view those areas where the yellow fever vaccine is recommended or is compulsory)

Travel is exciting! You may get to experience different cultures, enjoy a variety of food, visit beautiful locations and go to places and do things you have always dreamed of. However, many adventures and new places may pose new or different health and safety risks to you and your travel companion(s) that you have not experienced in New Zealand. Even if you are returning to your country of birth, you need to be correctly protected due to the constant changes in the global health environment,  health and safety concerns, and different travel trends etc.

Book your travel consultation with us

  • Ring our friendly receptionists on 03 348 8989 to book an appointment. Please tell our receptionists that you are coming for a travel consultation.
  • A travel consultation normally involves a Doctor’s appointment that runs between 15 to 30 minutes and a nurse appointment afterward for vaccinations if these are required. Sometimes a nurse may see you before the Doctor’s appointment to get more information about your travel plans.
  • Please arrange your travel consultation at least 6 – 8 weeks before departure for travel medication and vaccination advice. Some vaccines may take around 2 weeks to be fully effective to give you protection. And yellow fever vaccine needs to be given at least 10 days before travelling as a compulsory requirement in some countries. Please click here to see what vaccines are available at Doctors on Riccarton.
  • After your appointment is booked, an email will be sent to you. This will include information about your appointment. There will also be a questionnaire that we would like you to fill in and bring with you on the day of your appointment so our doctors and nurses can customise your consult and provide individualised information.

Fees

Our current charge for a travel consultation is $100. This does not include the fees for vaccinations. The cost of each vaccination varies. We can confirm the total fees on the day after your consultation with the doctor.

We require full payment for the consultation and required vaccinations on the day.  Payment for vaccinations are upfront i.e. prior to them being given.

What to bring to your travel consultation?

  • If you do not have access to the internet, a computer and/or a printer to complete the travel consult questionnaire that we sent you while you booked your appointment, please come at least 15 minutes prior to your appointment time if you are an enrolled patient of ours or at least 30 minutes prior if you are a new or casual patient.
  • Please bring a copy of your itinerary, a list of countries you are travelling to, and the activities you plan to do if this information is not provided to us through the online consultation questionnaire.
  • Please bring a list of all the medications that you are taking and/or you will be taking while you travelling.
  • Please bring a list of vaccinations you have had if this is available. If you do not have this information, please ring your GP’s office which may have your vaccination records if the vaccines were given in New Zealand in recent years.
